SSM GVM Upgrades –

What You Need to Know

An SSM (Second Stage Manufacture) GVM upgrade is a federally approved modification that increases your vehicle’s Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) rating before or after registration.

In simple terms, it legally allows your vehicle to carry more weight – including passengers, accessories, tools, fuel, and towing equipment – without breaching compliance or safety laws.

How it works

  • Engineered & Certified – The upgrade is designed, tested, and certified to meet strict Australian Design Rules (ADR).

  • Pre-Registration (new vehicles) – The GVM upgrade can be applied before first registration. Once done, the vehicle is registered with the new GVM capacity nationwide.

  • Post-Registration (in-service vehicles) – Upgrades can also be carried out on vehicles already registered. In this case, compliance is certified at a state or territory level.

Why it matters

  • Legally carry more load – Avoid fines, defects, and insurance issues caused by overloading.

  • Safer handling & braking – Upgraded suspension and components are tailored to manage extra weight on and off-road.

  • Nationwide recognition – Pre-reg SSM upgrades are recognised across all Australian states and territories.

  • Tailored to your needs – Whether you’re a tradesperson, fleet operator, touring family, or towing heavy loads, SSM upgrades provide a compliant solution.

When you’re towing or carrying heavy loads, two critical limits apply to your vehicle: Gross Combined Mass (GCM) and Braked Towing Capacity (BTC).

  • GCM (Gross Combined Mass): The maximum legal weight of your fully loaded vehicle plus whatever you are towing.

  • BTC (Braked Towing Capacity): The maximum weight your vehicle can legally tow when the trailer is fitted with its own brakes.

Why upgrades matter

Even if you upgrade your GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass), you can still be restricted by the factory GCM or BTC limits. Very few suspension manufacturers offer GCM and BTC upgrades due to the complex testing required.

What a certified upgrade does

  • GCM Upgrade – Increases the total allowable combined weight of vehicle + trailer, letting you safely tow while still carrying your gear.

  • BTC Upgrade – Lifts the legal towing capacity, so you can tow heavier caravans, boats, or trailers in line with your vehicle’s engineering.

  • Safety & Compliance – These upgrades are tested to stringent Standards and Procedures and Australian Design Rules (ADR) and can incorporate stronger towbars, chassis strengthening, suspension, driveline and braking solutions engineered to handle the extra mass.

  • Certified & Insurable – A properly engineered and approved upgrade keeps your vehicle compliant with road authorities and ensures your insurance remains valid. (Always check with your insurer)

Benefits for you

  • Tow bigger caravans or trailers legally and safely.

  • Carry more gear without sacrificing towing ability.

  • Peace of mind knowing your vehicle meets strict compliance requirements.

We have fully tested and approved GCM upgrades for a range of makes and models including....... Ford F150, Chevy Silverado, Toyota Landcruiser, Y62 Patrol PLUS........Tow Capacity (BTC) upgrades for Landcruiser 70, 200 and 300 series and Y62 Patrol

GCM & Tow Capacity Upgrades

      Post-Registration GVM Upgrades                          (State Certified)

If your vehicle is already registered, you can still increase its Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) through a state-based engineering certification process. This is known as a post-registration GVM upgrade.

Unlike federally approved pre-registration upgrades, post-registration upgrades are assessed and signed off by an authorised automotive engineer under the National Code of Practice (NCOP) or relevant state legislation.

Key points for consumers:

  • State-Specific Recognition – Once certified, the upgraded GVM is valid in the state or territory where the modification was approved. Recognition may vary if the vehicle is transferred interstate.

  • Engineering Certification – An approved engineer inspects the vehicle, confirms the modifications (usually upgraded suspension and associated components), and issues a compliance certificate.

  • Legal Compliance – The new GVM rating is recorded with your state road authority, ensuring the vehicle can be legally driven with the higher carrying capacity.

  • Insurance & Safety – With proper certification, your vehicle remains insurable and compliant, while also improving safety when carrying heavy loads or towing.

  • Flexibility – Ideal for tradies, fleets, or tourers who add gear after purchase and quickly exceed the factory GVM. When towing caravans, hauling tools, or fitting accessories, stock payload limits are often exceeded. Overloading risks include

· Braking inefficiency

.Steering instability

· Unsafe towing performance

· Suspension fatigue and sagging

Our Engineer designed and fully approved kits raise the allowable payload so you can fit bull bars, canopies, long-range tanks, or tow heavy trailers—while staying compliant across all Australian states and territories

GVM Upgrade Packages

A GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) upgrade increases the legal load capacity of your vehicle by fitting an approved suspension system. This means you can safely add accessories such as bull bars, roof racks, winches, canopies, tools, and touring gear without breaching compliance. In some cases, additional upgrades to brakes, chassis, or tyres are also required to meet safety standards.

If your vehicle is frequently near or above its factory GVM rating, an upgrade is strongly recommended. Overloading not only makes your vehicle unroadworthy but can also void your insurance. For vehicles already registered, post-registration GVM upgrades require certification by an authorised engineer in your state or territory.

It’s important to note that GVM upgrades can affect ride comfort, especially when the vehicle is lightly loaded. All components in the kit must be installed as supplied, without modification, to ensure compliance and safety.

Not every vehicle is suitable for a GVM upgrade, which is why a professional assessment of your load requirements is essential. At GVM Central, our approved fitment facilities guide you through the process to ensure the upgrade is tailored to your needs.
